Going old school

So this happened today:

The Flirt went fishing yesterday and brought home a good sized walleye. We had a birthday party to go to as soon as he got back, so we left the fish in his truck in a bucket over night.

Today, went he got up to go fishing, he brought the frozen fish in and put it in the sink. Once I got some coffee in me, and the fish thawed out a bit, I commenced to cleaning it.

The brand new electric knife I bought is, quite frankly, a piece of junk. Just trying to make my first cuts the stupid knives wouldn’t go through the fish! It practically liquified the whole front end of it. Yes, I made sure the knives were seated properly in the handle. It’s just a poor product.

Enough of that balloney!

I chucked that knife and pulled out The Flirt’s regular fillet knife. Not only did it cut well, but it gave me way more control over where I was cutting. I was able to salvage this fish and we have enough for supper tonight. Looking forward to fresh fried walleye!

Aunty B. would be proud. she was an expert fish cleaner, and she never used an electric knife. She sharpened her own knives as well. If using a regular knife was good enough for her, it is good enough for me. Come to think of it, my mom used to be quite a fish cleaner herself. Yep, she learned it from Aunty B.

There are actually a couple of good reasons for me not to use an electric knife. First, if there’s ever a time where we don’t have electricity, I can still clean fish, and other things. Second, I could cut myself badly with a sharp fillet knife, but there’s probably no danger of me accidentally cutting off a whole finger.

Now I need to learn how to use a whetstone. 😁

Faithful Readers, we are never too old to learn a new skill. Never!

Blessings all!
